What Are UTM Parameters and Why Marketers Use Them

If you send traffic to your website from multiple sources — social media posts, email campaigns, paid ads, partner sites — Google Analytics shows you that visitors arrived, but without additional information it cannot reliably tell you which specific campaign or post drove them.

utm_content is most useful when you are running A/B tests on different creative or copy, or when you have multiple links within the same campaign (like different buttons in an email). It tells you which specific element drove the click.

utm_term is specifically for paid search — it records which search keyword triggered the ad. Used primarily in Google Ads campaigns.

UTM Naming Conventions — Getting Them Right From the Start

Inconsistent UTM naming is one of the most common analytics data quality problems. "Facebook", "facebook", "FB", and "fb" in utm_source all show up as different traffic sources in analytics, fragmenting your data.

Establish conventions before you start and document them:

Always use lowercase. UTM parameters are case sensitive. Facebook and facebook are different.

Use hyphens, not spaces or underscores. Spaces in URLs get encoded as %20 which is ugly. Hyphens are clean and readable: eid-sale not eid sale or eid_sale.

Be specific but not too specific. instagram is better than social (too broad) and better than instagram-post-12345 (too granular for most purposes). Save granularity for utm_content.

Standardize medium values. Agree on exactly which medium labels your team uses and stick to them. A shared spreadsheet or notion document with approved values helps.

Document campaigns as you create them. Keep a record of which UTM parameters correspond to which campaigns. When you look at analytics data six months later, you will not remember what q1-test-v3 meant.

Common Use Cases

Email campaigns. Tag every link in your email with utm_source=newsletter (or the specific newsletter name), utm_medium=email, and utm_campaign=the email campaign name. Use utm_content to differentiate the header CTA from the body link from the footer link.

Social media posts. Tag links in posts, stories, bios, and paid ads. Use utm_source for the platform, utm_medium=social for organic and utm_medium=cpc for paid, and utm_campaign for the specific initiative.

Paid search ads. Use utm_source=google (or bing), utm_medium=cpc, utm_campaign=campaign-name, and utm_term for keyword tracking.

Influencer and affiliate campaigns. Give each influencer a unique utm_source so you can see exactly which influencer drove how much traffic and conversions.

Partner and referral links. Tag links you provide to partner sites with utm_source=partner-name and utm_medium=referral.

Offline to online. QR codes on printed materials, TV ads, podcasts — anywhere you drive traffic offline to a URL, UTM parameters tell you which offline source drove the visit.
