If you've ever bought a 1 Terabyte hard drive, plugged it into your Windows computer, and wondered why it only shows 931 Gigabytes of available space, you've been a victim of the great storage math debate. This calculator is built to help clarify exactly how data translates across different units.
The Base-2 vs Base-10 Problem
Hardware manufacturers market their drives using standard Base-10 math (where 1 Kilobyte equals exactly 1,000 Bytes). However, computers process data in Base-2 binary. To an operating system, 1 Kilobyte actually equals 1,024 Bytes. As file sizes scale up to Gigabytes and Terabytes, that 24-byte discrepancy compounds into massive "missing" storage blocks.
Binary Prefixes (GiB vs GB)
To solve this confusion, the tech industry introduced "Mebibytes" (MiB) and "Gibibytes" (GiB) to explicitly denote the 1024 binary standard, leaving MB and GB for the 1000 decimal standard. Unfortunately, Windows still uses the GB label while calculating with GiB math. This calculator explicitly relies on the OS-level binary standard (1024) so you can accurately predict file transfer limits.
