The Stacked Discount Trick

The biggest mistake consumers make is assuming percentages stack linearly. If a $100 jacket is "20% off, plus an extra 10% at the register," it is not 30% off ($70). Retail systems apply the first discount ($100 - 20% = $80), and then apply the second discount to the new subtotal ($80 - 10% = $72). Your actual total discount is only 28%.

The Reverse Math Fallacy

If you are a business owner calculating margins, be careful trying to reverse a discount. If you reduce a $100 item by 20%, it costs $80. If you try to restore the original price by adding 20% back to $80, you will only get $96. You always have to divide by the inverse percentage (e.g., $80 / 0.8) to find the original price.
