A lot of designers make the mistake of downloading random barcode fonts that fail to scan at the checkout register. The Mathematical Checksum

An EAN barcode is not just a random string of numbers. It strictly requires 13 digits. The 13th digit at the very end is a "Checksum"—a number mathematically calculated from the first 12 digits. Laser scanners use this checksum to instantly verify if they read the barcode correctly. If you input 12 digits, this tool will automatically run the algorithm to generate the correct 13th digit for you.

Printing and Contrast Rules

For a laser scanner to read this file, contrast is everything. Never print a barcode in light gray or place it on a dark colored background. Scanners expect stark black bars on a pure white background. You also must ensure there is a "Quiet Zone"—a blank white margin on the left and right edges of the bars—so the scanner knows where the data begins and ends.

GS1 Prefix Registration

Note: If you are selling a product on Amazon or at a major retailer like Walmart, you cannot just generate random numbers here. You must purchase an official GS1 company prefix. But for internal store inventory, any valid 13-digit sequence will work.
