A few things worth knowing

  • US vs Imperial: US and Imperial (UK) gallons are different — a US gallon is 3.785 litres, an Imperial gallon is 4.546 litres. The same applies to pints, cups, and fluid ounces. When following a recipe or fuel spec, check which system it uses
  • Cubic units for dry/bulk volume: Cubic metres and cubic feet are used for bulk materials, shipping containers, and rooms. Litres and gallons are for liquids
  • 1 mL = 1 cm³: Exactly, by definition. Useful when switching between chemistry and cooking contexts

How many cups are in a litre? Approximately 4.227 US cups per litre.

How do I convert US gallons to litres? Multiply by 3.78541. For example, 5 US gallons ≈ 18.93 litres.

What's the difference between a fluid ounce and a regular ounce? A fluid ounce measures volume; a regular ounce measures weight/mass. They're completely different units that happen to share a name.
